Full description

A vertically framed electro-mechanical playfield under a glass top, lit warmly so reds and oranges glow. The layout is symmetrical about a central spine. At the top a large translucent red plastic swirl/loop ramp arcs over a painted scene, with a muscular bare-chested man with a dark beard and headband standing inside it, arm raised, backed by a burning red-orange sky and dark tree silhouettes. Down the centre a vertical run of round insert lamps sits between two painted blue-grey male figures; above them two painted men in blue-grey crouch aiming, and five white round bumpers spell out letters reading K, A, R, T, E. Mid-playfield two slingshots flank the lane, with drop-target banks and rectangular target plaques either side, and '10,000 YELLOW' insert circles. Lower down two large mirrored blue-grey painted men, one bare-chested with a headband and one in a shirt, face each other across the flipper area, each arm raised in a blocking pose, backed by radiating red sunburst wedges. Two red rubber-tipped flippers sit at the base, with a round SHOOT AGAIN insert between them and a cluster of scoring inserts marked 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and multipliers 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X. The lower apron carries instruction cards, a large PINBALL wordmark and a model script logo. Dust and reflection haze cover the glass; the red swirl ramp is scuffed.

Distinctive

The most memorable feature is the central blue-tinted white-haired man's enormous head and outstretched hand, which break straight through the tiled background and read almost as a cut-out collage over the orange wall. Second is the sheer orange-and-black tiled backdrop paired with the screaming yellow-green fighter in a white gi. Third, the two giant brush-painted Japanese characters at the lower left. Fourth, the very wide black title band reading BLACK BELT in gold. Fifth, the strip of mechanical reel-style score windows along the bottom edge showing spelled-out words rather than numbers.

Full description

A landscape-format martial-arts themed backglass painted in a bold graphic comic style. Across the whole upper third runs the title BLACK BELT in enormous yellow-gold slab-serif capitals with heavy black outline and dark drop shadow, set against a black band. The background is a warm orange-to-crimson wall of square dojo-panelled tiles outlined in black. Four male martial artists dominate: at centre a cool blue-grey man with swept-up white hair and a white headband, staring straight ahead with a hard cold expression, hands raised in a defence or trapping gesture; at left a screaming yellow-green man in a white gi with a yellow headband, mouth wide open, fist clenched; behind him a muscular bare-armed man in orange-red tones leaping with a leg thrust out; at right a man in a white tank top and orange trousers grappling, one arm locked around a second man's neck. Two large black brush-stroke Japanese characters are painted at the lower left. The palette is dominated by orange, blue, black and yellow-gold, with strong complementary contrast between the cool blue centre figure and the hot orange surround.

A horizontally framed backglass with a black border band at top carrying the title, an orange-and-yellow airbrushed fight scene in the middle, and a black banner strip along the bottom holding a slogan and four mechanical score reels. The title KARATE FIGHT is painted in rough orange-red brush capitals with a heavy black shadow, split either side of a central head. Four male fighters occupy the scene: at centre a tall, grey-faced, black-haired man in a pale blue-and-white belted gi, seen in profile facing left with a stern jaw, throwing a high side kick; to the left a man in a white gi with a yellow-and-black headband, mouth open in a shout, being struck; behind him a second opponent in yellow and orange with a clenched fist; at right a bare-chested, orange-tan-skinned man in brown trousers leaning backwards as a brown-trousered leg kicks up above him. Bottom left are small black silhouette pictographs of two kicking figures and a large Japanese character. The slogan YOU SHALL BECOME A BLACK BELT! is printed in white capitals below the art.
