Full description

Full-length electromechanical playfield shot from above inside its wooden cabinet, with the front of the cabinet and coin door visible at the bottom. The field is dominated by a wide crimson-red outer lane running round a steel ball guide, a turquoise-blue central panel, and a large red wedge down the middle carrying a column of horseshoe-shaped targets stamped 1000 to 10,000 in gold. Four drop targets with playing-card-suit faces sit in an arc across the top, below a red barn-like housing with a white X-brace motif. Two yellow-capped pop bumpers flank the drop targets, and two large round bumpers with sunburst faces reading 100 and MARKED 100 sit midway. Illustrated cartoon figures decorate the blue field: a jester/clown figure at upper left, a grinning clown head at left, a woman in a hat at right, a mustachioed man below her, and playing-card-suited jester figures on the cream apron panels at both lower corners. Cream instruction cards fill the apron, with a huge red script logo centred between them.

Distinctive

A wild-haired cartoon man in a red shirt is frozen mid-tumble, head-down, off a rearing white horse in the exact centre, with his white cowboy hat spinning away to the left and a smoking revolver in his raised hand. The second-most memorable element is the huge cream-yellow FLIP FLOP! title in heavy black-shadowed block capitals arcing across his body, with a small gold five-pointed star tucked above the second letter. A grinning Indigenous caricature in a feathered war bonnet stands at the far left making a V-sign, and a red barn with three card players fills the right side. Two covered pioneer wagons and two brown horses sit symmetrically in the upper band, framing a horseshoe-shaped medallion with a red cursive wordmark.

Full description

A Western-themed painted backglass set in a desert canyon at dusk, with a teal-blue sky, orange clouds and layered purple mesa rock behind a red-and-tan adobe ranch house with a white X-braced barn door. Across the upper band two covered canvas wagons with big black spoked wheels face inward, each hitched to a brown horse, and above them a horseshoe-shaped medallion holds a red cursive wordmark. Four cream mechanical score windows span the width, framed by red bands patterned with black geometric glyphs, separated by horseshoe-framed oval player windows reading 1 UP, 2 UP, 3 UP and 4 UP. Dominating the centre is a cartoon caricature of a wild-haired man in a bright red double-breasted shirt and blue jeans, leaping with one arm outstretched, clutching a smoking pistol, and tumbling head-first off a rearing white horse; his white hat flies off beside him. Huge cream-yellow block letters with black drop shadow spell FLIP FLOP! across the middle. At left a grinning feather-headdress chief in a red loincloth holds a peace sign; at right three seated card players in bright shirts and cowboy hats play beside a red barn. Foreground details include a saguaro cactus, a small white cat, a dead steer, a rearing mustang, an open-mouthed grinning dog, cactus, playing cards and scrub grass.

Fingerprint: "FLIP FLOP!" in yellow blocks split by laughing tumbling cowboy; pale blue cowboy hat flying off; stern Native American chief in feathered headdress on white horse at left; mounted cowboys riding toward red barn at right; four yellow horseshoe arches with 1 UP and 2 UP; dog, kitten, covered wagons, pink mesas, bright sky

Distinctive

The most memorable element is the laughing cowboy tumbling head-first through the centre of the artwork, wedged between the two halves of the giant yellow FLIP FLOP! title, with a pale blue-and-white cowboy hat flying off beside him. Second, the title is split in two by the falling figure, so the words read as separate blocks on either side of him. Third, the yellow horseshoe-shaped 1 UP and 2 UP arches, each with a pointing finger icon, stand out as four bright repeated shapes against the pink mesa background. Fourth, a stern feather-headdress chief on a white horse anchors the left edge while a red barn and a line of mounted cowboys anchor the right.

Setting

  • Bright blue sky with flat streaked yellow clouds
  • Pink-magenta desert mesas in the middle distance
  • Sandy tan foreground with tufts of green grass and cactus
  • Red barn at the right edge
  • Wooden rail fence running horizontally across the middle
  • Ridge line at the right where mounted cowboys travel

Symbols

  • Two white canvas covered wagons with brown wooden wheels
  • Six yellow horseshoe arches with red lettering
  • Pointing hand icons inside the horseshoes
  • Yellow five-pointed stars flanking the title
  • Red barn with white x-braced doors
  • Wooden rail fence
  • Green saguaro cactus
  • Row of dark green cactus at the left edge
  • Red wooden wagon wheels
  • Hanging wooden bucket or tub
  • Yellow straw or hay tufts
  • Bricks or masonry border tiles carrying geometric markings around the reel windows

Lettering

  • Main title in very large heavy yellow sans-serif block capitals with thick black outlines and a slight drop shadow, split into two groups by the falling figure; the maker name at top centre in flowing red cursive script on a blue oval inside a yellow medallion; the 1 up and 2 up labels in tall condensed red capitals on yellow arch panels; '1 to 4 can play' in white serif capitals on a brown wooden sign; 'ball in play' in red capitals on a yellow arrow-ended panel

Full description

Colourful hand-painted cartoon Western backglass, landscape format, under a bright blue sky streaked with flat yellow clouds and backed by pink-magenta mesas. Across the middle, enormous block letters in yellow with heavy black outlines and a yellow five-pointed star read FLIP, then a falling cowboy, then FLOP!. The central figure is a laughing dark-haired man in a red shirt, blue jeans and boots, tumbling head-first through the air with one arm flung up and a wide open-mouthed grin. At the left a stern-faced Native American chief in a full multicoloured feather headdress rides a white horse; at the right three more cowboys in coloured hats ride along a ridge towards a red barn, with a brown horse's head below them. Four yellow horseshoe arches carry red 1 UP and 2 UP lettering and pointing-hand icons, and two banks of white score reels in red and yellow tiled surrounds run across the top and bottom. A white-and-brown dog bounds across the lower centre beside a small white kitten. Two white canvas covered wagons sit at the top corners, and green cactus and grass tufts line the sandy foreground.
