Who and what
Kind Description
Man Upper left corner, small painted figure in profile facing right, wearing a red peaked cap, red vest over a white shirt, dark green trousers and dark shoes; arms raised holding the top of a hanging dark teal rectangular banner carrying one white five-pointed star.

Full description

A varnished wooden-framed backglass painted as a symmetrical carnival scene. Across the top, arched on a dark navy blue disc, is the main title JUBILEE in large slanted slab-serif capitals, cream-white with a red outline and heavy black drop shadow. Below the title hangs a red scroll band, and beneath that a huge hot-air balloon envelope fills the centre: scalloped cream-white top, pale blue band, then a lower section of horizontal red, white and blue stripes with white stars. The balloon's dark blue basket carries a red banner reading BALL in PLAY in white block letters on a cream stripe, and lower down a cream scroll bearing the red script signature D. Gottlieb & Co., with the word Players in red script on a white ribbon below. Four numbered score panels flank the balloon on the green ground: 1 (red panel, top left), 2 (dark blue panel, top right), 3 (dark blue panel, bottom left) and 4 (red panel, bottom right), each with three cream window rectangles and captions 1st PLAYER, 2nd PLAYER, 3rd PLAYER, 4th PLAYER. Two small costumed figures stand in the upper corners each holding a hanging banner: left, a man in a red cap, red vest, white shirt and green trousers holding a dark teal banner with a single white star; right, a figure in a dark blue jacket, red tights and white collar holding a crimson banner bearing a white roundel. The ground is a mottled pale yellow-green cobble pattern, with red diamond card-suit motifs at the very bottom flanking the basket.
