Playfield Sound Stage

Fingerprint: Large blue-white concentric spiral vortex disc with 100 beneath ringed red, two white pop targets with red starbursts flanking spinner with reel windows SPIN SPIN, enormous white circular bonus dial marked 2000-10000 around DOUBLE BONUS MULTI BALL, carnival shooting-gallery theme, gold-teal-magenta palette

Distinctive

The centrepiece is a large blue-and-white concentric spiral vortex disc with the number 100 beneath it, ringed by a red band. Flanking it are two white pop targets carrying 100 inside red starbursts, and a spinner whose two small reel windows both read SPIN SPIN in red on magenta. The lower half is dominated by an enormous white circular bonus dial marked with 2000 through 10000 around a central DOUBLE BONUS MULTI BALL disc. Two big blue arrows on the apron point inward and both read FLIPPER BUTTON, one on each side of the slingshots. The colour scheme of gold, teal, magenta and white with carnival target stalls is unusual and very hard to confuse.

Full description

A tall, portrait-format 1970s-style electro-mechanical playfield laid out like a travelling carnival shooting gallery, inside a wood-framed glass-topped cabinet. The field is symmetrically printed in gold, teal, magenta and white with flat fairground-stall art. Upper left is a booth with a woman in a bonnet beside a large white starburst target reading 100; upper right mirrors it with another 100 target and a painted male attendant holding a rifle, plus a dark painted horse and circus animal. Two white pop targets marked 100 in red starbursts flank a spinner with two reel windows reading SPIN SPIN in red on a magenta ribbon. At the centre sits a large blue-and-white concentric spiral disc with 100 beneath it. Below, a big white circular bonus dial ringed 2000 to 10000 surrounds DOUBLE BONUS MULTI BALL, flanked by slanting magenta lanes marked ADVANCE A BONUS and 8000/10000 BONUS BALL. Two white-flippered bats sit low between blue arrows reading FLIPPER BUTTON; the cream apron carries dense black instruction print, FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY and 5 BALLS PER GAME. Metal ball guides run up both outer sides.

Backglass Standard

  • orange
  • red

Fingerprint: "JUKE BOX" title with speaker motif, dancing women in 1980s disco clothes, two segmented score strips with UP UP arrows, celebration and slumped figure, sunburst bands.

Distinctive

The whole scene is a pun on a jukebox with a dance-hall queue: cartoon women in 1980s disco clothing are strung across radiating yellow, cyan and orange sunburst bands, several mid-kick as if dancing. Two long white segmented score strips labelled 1 PLAYER / 2 PLAYER and 3 PLAYER / 4 PLAYER sit directly beneath the title, split by pairs of red UP UP arrows. The two women in the top corners throw their arms up in celebration while the woman at bottom right slumps sadly over a red cylinder, giving the cheerful art an ironic note. The title JUKE BOX appears in fat white slab capitals inside a rounded orange lozenge, with the O rendered as a speaker/jukebox motif.

Setting

  • Radiating sunburst bands of yellow, cyan and orange
  • Flat cartoon backdrop with no horizon line

Symbols

  • Red up up arrow pairs between score strips
  • Four red numbered circles 1-4
  • Speaker/jukebox motif in the title letter o
  • Black musical notes scattered on the sunburst background

Lettering

  • Large white slab-serif capitals with red keyline on a rounded orange lozenge for the title; small white cursive script above; compact black block capitals on white banner tabs for the player labels

Full description

A wide backglass set in a blue metal frame, with a cartoon pop-art background of broad wavy yellow, cyan-blue and orange sunburst bands radiating from the centre. Across the top sits a rounded orange-red lozenge banner carrying the main title in large white slab-serif capitals with a red keyline, reading JUKE BOX, the O drawn as a circular speaker motif. Above it, in small white cursive on black, is the script Chicago Coin, and above that a tiny arched word in yellow block letters. Below the banner are two white segmented score strips, the upper labelled 1 PLAYER and 2 PLAYER and the lower 3 PLAYER and 4 PLAYER, each a row of rectangular windows with pairs of red UP UP arrows between them. Cartoon women and girls populate the art: two at the top corners with arms raised, a band of four dancing across the middle, and two more in the lower corners, one singing into a microphone and one slumped dejectedly over a red cylinder. The lower centre reads BALLY (c) 1984 in small print, and the lower left shows PLAYERS above four red circles numbered 1 2 3 4.
