Kingpin backglass

Backglass

  • pink-red
  • yellow
  • royal blue
  • charcoal grey

Fingerprint: "CIRCUS" title with each letter half horizontal red stripes, half royal blue, gold fleur-de-lis inside. "THE PINBALL" above. "MIDWAY" dark lettering on pink-red bottom band. Gold rococo crest, acanthus scrolls, ornamental flourishes. Charcoal-grey speckled field, lettering only, no figures. Large white glare blob lower left.

Distinctive

The huge circus-poster word CIRCUS, where every letter is half red-striped and half royal blue with gold fleur-de-lis emblems tucked inside the letterforms. Second most memorable is the plain pink-red border band with the dark MIDWAY wordmark sitting in the middle of the bottom edge. Also striking: a completely blank, letter-only backglass with no characters at all, and a big white glare blob in the lower left corner.

Full description

A flat rectangular printed title panel with a dark charcoal-grey speckled field, framed top and bottom by bright pink-red bands edged with a thin yellow pinstripe. The whole piece is lettering and ornament only - there are no people, animals or vehicles anywhere on it. Across the upper centre sits the smaller line THE PINBALL in red slab-serif capitals with a dark outline. Below it, filling nearly the full width, is CIRCUS in enormous fat circus-poster capitals: each letter is white-outlined, the upper half filled with horizontal red stripes and the lower half with royal blue, and the counters are decorated with yellow-gold fleur-de-lis, gold acanthus scrolls and rows of round gold dots. A gold rococo fleur-de-lis crest sits centred on the top border. At bottom centre the word MIDWAY appears in heavy dark letters against the pink-red band, flanked by symmetrical gold rococo scrollwork. Bottom right, tiny print reads 1993 MIDWAY MANU. Bottom left is a large blown-out white oval of glare that obscures whatever is there.
