Full description

A mid-century electro-mechanical playfield shot from directly above, set in a red-magenta cabinet whose side rails are painted with yellow flame scrolls on black. The wood is dominated by a huge white starburst / exploding-bomb motif in the centre, ringed by a fan of nine round white insert lamps. Two identical brunette pin-up women in strapless lime-green dresses stand left and right of that burst, each leaning in and pointing a hand down towards the middle. Above them a big chrome tubular wire ramp loops in a horseshoe over the upper playfield, enclosing three red star-capped pop bumpers on cream bodies. Tan parallelogram instruction plates with black type sit between the bumpers. Flanking the bumpers at the top left and top right are two tilted triangular star-burst panels reading SHOOT FOR HOT, each with a grinning cartoon head in a cap above it. The lower deck is a black lacquer apron with SPECIAL printed in silver on both sloping edges, a white-on-red Williams script wordmark centred, and a cream LASER BALL instruction card screwed to the right. Overall palette: red/magenta, black, chrome silver, yellow flame trim.

Full description

Square backglass, dark magenta and orange airbrushed sci-fi style. A full-length painted woman with flame-shaped orange hair stands centre frame, arms flung wide, fingers splayed, nails painted green, wearing a lime-green sleeveless top. Broad straight beams of yellow, lime green and pale mint radiate from her across the lower two-thirds, fanning symmetrically like searchlights over a magenta ground crossed by jagged white lightning streaks. Large orange spheres float among the beams: several carry the same woman's face in dark silhouette (one with hooded hair and dark glasses, one with flowing hair), two smaller ones hold head-and-shoulders outlines, one is a gridded globe covered in dense small lettering, two are plain. Pale blue angular triangular shards printed with scattered letterforms sit at lower left and lower right like floating cards. Orange-framed windows of score reels line the top, with smaller reel and display panels below. A red ball-shaped lamp reads BALL IN PLAY, flanked by panels reading GAME OVER and TILT.

Fingerprint: "LASER BALL": red-haired woman with splayed fingers, six striped green-and-yellow laser cones radiating outward with red balls, large black numeral 6, pale blue crystal pedestal

Distinctive

The single most memorable element is the red-haired woman at dead centre with her fingers splayed and six striped green-and-yellow laser cones bursting outward from behind her, each cone ending in a solid red ball. Immediately beneath her chest, framed by her outstretched hands, is a large black numeral 6 sitting on a red burst background, with a jagged black furry trim across her bust. Red spheres of the same colour as the frame paint recur throughout the lower half, which is unusual in laser-themed artwork. A pale blue cut-crystal pedestal directly under her and ice-blue shard shapes at both bottom corners complete the composition.

  • Black field overlaid with horizontal white pinstripes
  • Dark maroon and black radiating burst behind the central figure

Rectangular backglass in a chipped red-painted wooden frame, on a black background overlaid with horizontal white pinstripes. Across the top, huge italic block capitals with red and yellow fill and heavy black shadow spell the title LASER BALL, with a small circled W at upper right. Green-and-yellow striped laser beams run inward from each side, each carrying a yellow disc reading 1ST on the left and 2ND on the right, plus two black cartouches reading Williams in gold script. Dead centre is one woman in comic airbrush style: a pale redhead with voluminous upswept flame-red hair, heavy black winged eyeliner, bare shoulders, and a strapless green and black bodice with jagged black furry trim across the bust. Her hands are raised splayed beside her face, fingers spread. Six striped conical laser beams radiate behind her, each tipped with a solid red sphere, over a dark maroon burst.
