Papillon

Full-length electro-mechanical playfield seen through glass, framed by wooden side rails and a black lower apron. The artwork is a bright carnival and fruit-machine collage: a black starfield scattered with red, blue and yellow stars, red heart card suits, cherries, apples, dice, a grinning jester in a ruff collar and cone hat near the upper centre, and a woman in a red dress posed above him. A yellow sunburst panel left of centre carries the words SUN IS BELOW, and a large yellow star sits below it. Along the bottom are two cream-coloured flippers, a khaki SAME PLAYER SHOOT AGAIN panel, a yellow CREDIT label, a globe logo ringed with THE WORLD, and a small MIKE signature.

Landscape-format backglass under a black and stainless cabinet rail. The word PAPILLON spans the whole top in very large block capitals, lettered in red with a thick yellow-gold gradient and white drop shadow; the O contains a stylised red-and-yellow pinwheel or eye motif. Below the title, a painted planet Earth with orange, brown and blue cloud swirls sits centre-top on a yellow-to-blue sky. The centre of the glass is dominated by two enormous mirror-image female profiles facing each other, both with lips puckered almost touching: the left face is warm orange, yellow and red, the right face is pale blue, teal and violet. Each face is framed by a huge stylised butterfly wing or wing-shaped helmet structure decorated with three eye-spots (red-and-blue concentric rings on the left, yellow-and-black rings on the right). Four red seven-segment windows sit around the artwork (score at upper left showing 3662970, plus three blank red windows lower left, upper right and lower right), with a small two-digit red credit display at centre right. The lower third shows a receding grey motorway and bridge vanishing to a horizon, a long-haired guitarist in a cream jacket with an electric guitar at lower left-centre, and a dark streamlined finned car at lower right. A small oval script maker's badge sits in the bottom-left corner.

The word PAPILLON spans the entire top in large red-orange block capitals with a white keyline and dark shadow, set on a wash that runs from hot yellow and orange on the left through pale cream to deep cyan-blue on the right. Behind the title sits a large cratered sphere, a moon or planet, rendered in rusty brown, grey and white, occupying the upper centre. The centre of the glass is dominated by two large profile faces turned towards each other, noses almost touching. The left face is painted in fiery orange and yellow with a closed eye and red lips; the right face is a cool cyan-blue with a pale eye and pink lips. Each face is framed by a raised wing like a butterfly or moth wing outlined in white and black, studded with large round eyes with green irises and pale pupils. Black rectangular cut-out windows sit in pairs at the top left and top right and again lower down at mid-left and mid-right. Along the bottom is a painted city skyline in grey-blue with a wide road or track receding into the distance, and at the lower right a domed building with arched openings.
