Full description

A wood-railed, glass-topped American football playfield on an electro-mechanical game, photographed with the backbox removed and leaning against a black background. The field is a bright green oval pitch ringed by orange-brown turf, printed at the top of the field with three separate stadia-style crowd stands carrying cartoon spectators in flat 1950s colours. Eight numbered scoring lanes are marked by pop-bumper-capped posts: 1 and 4 across the top (blue-and-white caps), 2 and 3 on the upper corners behind red-shield '2' and '3' panels, 5 and 7 midway on blue-capped posts, and 6 and 8 low on the flanks behind tilted white 'FLIPPER' bats. Two cartoon cheerleaders in short-sleeved jumpers and flared skirts, one red-haired in navy, one blonde in red, stand mid-field reaching up towards the scoring lamps. Three large red-glowing pop bumpers with orange starburst bases sit on the centre line. Painted tan footballs and pale goal-post crescents flank the lower centre above a blue apron carrying a large cream instruction card, and the glass reflects lights across the upper half.

Full description

Illustrated American-football backglass built around a giant yellow stadium bowl shaped like a rose. Across the top, a curved navy ribbon banner carries the title ROSE-BOWL in huge slanted yellow capitals with red inline and a black drop shadow. Upper left, a smiling blonde pin-up woman in a yellow top and flowing red skirt, wearing a red rose headband, leans out of a white cloud holding a long thin pole diagonally. The stadium below is drawn in three-quarter perspective: a dark green pitch with white yard lines, hash marks, goal posts with red flags, small printed yard numbers 10, 20, 30 and 40 running up both sides, and tiny players in maroon, yellow and blue kits. Crowds of blue-and-white speckled figures pack the white terraces. The outer yellow wall is printed with a red-and-white number strip reading 0 through 17 and the word TOUCHDOWNS in black capitals above it. Bottom right a large maroon-jerseyed player, number 6, in a white helmet marked with a blue stripe, winds up to throw a brown football. The bottom edge shows three smaller running players in navy and maroon. A white scroll at lower left reads A PRODUCT OF D. GOTHLIEB & CO. CHICAGO, ILL., beside deep red roses. A yellow signpost at left reads VISITORS and HOME TEAM.
