Backglass Fair Lady

  • red
  • white
  • blue
  • yellow

Fingerprint: fair lady: giant red FAIR LADY lettering arched over white scroll, TWO-PLAYER in blue capitals on white arrow top, two side-by-side score windows numbered 1 and 2, two mask-crown women 1950s pin-up style flanking grinning multi-coloured jester between two speech bubbles, four reels with 1st 2nd PLAYER labels

Distinctive

The two-player gimmick is shouted in the artwork itself: giant red FAIR LADY lettering arched over a white scroll, TWO-PLAYER in blue capitals on a white arrow at the top, and two side-by-side score windows each numbered 1 and 2. Two mask-and-crown women in a comic 1950s pin-up style flank a grinning multi-coloured jester between two speech bubbles. Two separate rows of four reels with their own 1st PLAYER and 2nd PLAYER labels make the dual-player layout obvious at a glance. A D. Gottlieb & Co. signature sits in a small yellow box at the lower right.

Full description

A brightly coloured, cartoon-illustrated backglass set in a wooden cabinet frame, dominated by a hot red background with vertical pink-and-white pinstripes. Across the upper left a huge arcing title in red block capitals with black-and-white outline reads FAIR LADY, with the white cursive word Gottlieb above it on a cream scroll. A white arrow banner along the top carries TWO-PLAYER in blue capitals; a small cream panel to the right reads Amusement Pinballs. Two women flank the centre: at left a blonde woman in a blue masquerade mask with white dots holds her hand up to it, and at right a smiling red-haired woman in a white-and-blue off-shoulder top, blue bead necklace and pink jewelled crown/veil. Between them a jester in red, blue and yellow fool's costume with a grinning yellow face and red cap waves a hand beside red, yellow and blue balloons. Two pale speech bubbles read 1 or 2 CAN PLAY / AT THE / SAME TIME and IT'S MORE FUN TO COMPETE! / A GAME OF SKILL. Below are two red-framed windows numbered 1 and 2, each with four cream reels showing 1 0 0 0 and 0 0 0 0, labelled 1st PLAYER and 2nd PLAYER. A yellow bar at the foot reads BALL in PLAY between two red arrows.
