Full description

Full-cabinet view of a sea-monster themed electro-mechanical playfield, shot from above so the sea-green cabinet, coin door, START badge and the whole playfield show at once. The art is flat, bright comic-book watercolour in hot pink, red, yellow, cream and sky blue. The dominant figure is a huge rearing green sea serpent with a pink-and-red scaly head, open fanged jaws, a yellow belly and a long checkered dark-green body curling down the centre-left. Beside its head stands a small mermaid-like woman with long dark hair and a pink top. Lower centre is a cream sailing ship with a red and blue striped hull on stylised blue-and-white waves. An arc of round cream bonus lamps curves down the centre, flanked by pink plastic lamp covers glowing magenta. Three round star-printed pop-bumper caps run diagonally up the upper left. Two white rubber flippers with red rings point inwards at the lower centre, flanked by tall pink-guarded slingshots, with a red DOUBLE WHEEL LIT BONUS disc between them. The cabinet paint is crazed with age.

Playfield

  • pink
  • cream
  • pale green
  • silver-grey

Fingerprint: Worn electro-mechanical machine showing pale green cabinet with extensive paint crazing, scratched silver coin door with two slots, cluster of pink and magenta posts in upper half, white bumper caps, dense wire ball guides, cream FLIPPER BUTTON plates, heavily reflective glass obscuring playfield

Distinctive

The most memorable feature is the cabinet front rather than the playfield art: a heavily worn, scratched silver coin door with two vertical coin slots and a round service-button hole, set into pale green cabinet sides whose paint has crazed and cracked into a fine web of fissures. Second, the playfield is unusually saturated, with a dense cluster of tall pink and magenta posts and white-topped bumper caps standing in rows up the upper half beneath a tangle of wire ball guides. Third, the glass carries heavy diagonal glare and reflections that mask much of the printed playfield surface. The only lettering resolvable anywhere in the frame is the pair of cream FLIPPER BUTTON plates on the front panel.

Notable shapes

  • Arched wire ball guides over the upper playfield; a round service-button hole in the coin door; a cracked, crazed paint finish across the pale green cabinet sides

Full description

Straight-on photograph of a whole electro-mechanical pinball machine viewed from the player side through the playfield glass, with the cabinet front and coin door filling the lower third. The playfield wood is busy and brightly coloured, with saturated pink and magenta areas against pale blue and cream. Several tall pink/magenta plastic posts and round white-topped bumper caps stand in rows across the upper half, with two larger white domes nearer the middle. Wire ball guides arc over the top. Two small cream-yellow instruction cards with dense black print are mounted on the left side, and a paler card sits right of centre; their body text is too small to resolve. On the cabinet front, a cream rectangular plate at left reads FLIPPER BUTTON and a matching plate at right carries the same words. Below them a scratched silver-grey coin door has two vertical coin slots, a round service-button hole and a worn coin-return flap. The cabinet sides are pale green with a crazed, cracked finish. Strong glare and reflections streak the playfield glass. No title lettering, logo or character artwork was readable in this photograph.

Sea Scare backglass

Backglass

  • pink

Fingerprint: 'SEA SCARE' title split vertically, huge sea serpent with purple-pink mane, yellow fanged mouth, blonde in orange bikini and jeweled headdress standing on coils, crowded pirate crew in boat shouting in red and blue, pink tentacled creature reaching from water, yellow light beams, green-blue sea, coastal cliffs background, flat comic heavily-outlined illustration style.

Distinctive

A gigantic purple-maned sea serpent with round yellow staring eyes and a wide fanged mouth filling the left of the scene, with a bikini-clad blonde woman in a plumed headdress standing improbably on its coils. A pirate-crewed boat packed shoulder to shoulder with shouting men in red waistcoats, bandanas and a wide black hat fills the lower half. A cream counter window printed into the artwork reads 100.500, and the title SEA SCARE is split, SEA stacked vertically beside SCARE. A black-bordered green crackle-glaze border with two tall dark-green spear/arrow motifs runs the full height of both sides.

Full description

Printed backglass with a broad pale-green crackle-glaze border framing a rounded-rectangle picture. Lettering: the word 'SEA' runs vertically in chunky dark-red block capitals with black drop shadow down the left of centre, and 'SCARE' continues horizontally across the middle in the same fat bevelled red capitals outlined black, so the title reads SEA SCARE. Above it, a cream bar carries 'EURO' at left, a hand-lettered credit panel reading 'PETACO' with a small figure emblem, and 'FLIP' at right. A black-framed window near the top shows a mechanical counter reading 100.500 on cream reels. Bottom centre reads 'BALL IN PLAY' in white-and-yellow capitals over a pink-clad thigh. Art is flat, heavily outlined comic illustration: a blonde woman in an orange two-piece and jewelled headdress stands on the back of a huge sea serpent with a purple-pink mane, bulging yellow eyes and a gaping fanged mouth. Below, a boat's gunwale carries a row of shouting pirates in red, blue, green and striped clothing, while a pink tentacled monster reaches from the right into the water. Background is a green-blue sea with yellow light beams, cliffs, a coastal village and distant hills.
