Full description

A full electro-mechanical pinball playfield photographed under glass, with the cabinet's front panel and a plain grey backbox below. The layout is symmetric about a vertical axis. Across the top is an arched band of sky-blue and gold with a row of four round pop-bumper caps, each white with a blue base ring and a big red '50'; beneath sit three more bumper caps printed cream with a winged medallion, flanked by red star-and-crescent banners. The upper middle holds a large sculpted turbaned, bearded figure in flowing robes with outstretched arms inside a golden halo of rays, ringed by orange-and-cream ribbon banners. The centre is dominated by a huge white circular disc printed like a grinning skull or moon: 'SILVERBALL' in widely spaced black block letters on one line, 'MANIA' below in the same style, over pale blue spikes. Below sit two red diamond panels with grey sculpted mask faces reading 'WIZARD' and 'SUPER WIZARD', with '500 POINTS' and '5 POINTS'. A pale blue teardrop plaque reads 'WHEN LIT SILVERBALL MANIA SPECIAL'. The lower playfield has two white-and-red flipper bats, a large magenta-and-black five-pointed star, 'KICKER' and 'SPECIAL' panels, and a 'SHOOT AGAIN' / 'WHEN LIT' insert on the right. The apron is turquoise with a white pinstriped V and a large 'PINBALL' wordmark, flanked by cream instruction cards.

Fingerprint: Grinning gap-toothed balding man's head floating bare-shouldered at white-hot core of rainbow airbrushed sunburst, SILVERBALL title arched over him, extraordinarily dense Victorian-style white scrollwork filigree border on solid black, four dead-black rectangular windows symmetrically placed, radiant circle as only warm colour, ornamental frame with acanthus flourishes

Distinctive

The single most memorable feature is a grinning, gap-toothed balding man's head floating bare-shouldered at the white-hot core of a rainbow airbrushed sunburst, with the title arched over him. Framing all of it is an extraordinarily dense Victorian-style white scrollwork filigree border on solid black, quite unlike the glowing circle it surrounds. Four dead-black rectangular windows sit symmetrically, two upper and two lower, leaving the radiant circle as the only warm colour in the piece. The word SILVERBALL is painted twice — once arched large across the top of the medallion, once letter-spaced along the very bottom edge.

Setting

  • Flat black background
  • Central circular medallion with radiating rainbow sunburst
  • Ornate white scrollwork filigree border on all four edges

Symbols

  • Large radiating sunburst of concentric colour bands
  • Engraved acanthus-leaf scrollwork
  • Curling vine tendrils
  • Floral corner knots
  • Circular medallion frame
  • Four plain black rectangular apertures

Lettering

  • Main title in tall block capitals, pale icy blue with white highlights, navy drop shadow and a magenta-to-pink gradient underline, arched to follow the top of the central circle. a small yellow script word with a black outline sits at the upper left of the medallion above the initial capital. the name is repeated along the bottom margin in widely letter-spaced pale blue capitals.

Themes

Full description

A rectangular backglass panel with a jet-black field almost entirely enclosed by an elaborate white and pale-grey filigree border of symmetrically mirrored scrollwork, acanthus flourishes and curling vine tendrils, drawn in hard-edged black linework like an engraved Victorian frame. The four corners each hold a dense knot of scrolls, and the left and right borders carry stacked floral medallions. In the centre sits a large circular medallion whose interior is a radiant airbrushed sunburst of magenta, pink, orange, yellow, green and cyan bands, brightest at a white-hot core low in the circle. Arched across the upper half of that medallion, and over the sunburst, is the main title in tall, blocky, slightly condensed capitals, pale icy blue with white highlights, a dark navy shadow and a bright magenta-to-pink underline band, following the curve of the circle. Below the title, at the heart of the burst, a single disembodied male head and shoulders floats front-on: a grinning, gap-toothed man with a receding hairline, heavy dark brows and stubble, tinted yellow-green and orange by the glow behind him. Four plain black rectangular apertures, unlit and empty, are cut into the panel — a wide one at upper left and upper right flanking the medallion, and a matching wide one at lower left and lower right. Along the bottom margin, below the medallion, the name is repeated in widely letter-spaced pale blue capitals.

Full description

A portrait-format painted backglass dominated by a huge central wizard figure: an elderly man with a long white beard, heavy purple/magenta eyebrows, a full violet and pink hooded cloak, and a small white four-pointed star glowing on his forehead, staring straight out with a severe expression. Behind him is a fiery orange and yellow flame-filled arch with concentric rainbow bands (red, orange, yellow, green, blue) curving around both sides, and jagged red lightning-bolt tracery on a black background filling the side borders. Four circular orbs sit in the corners, each containing a coiled, knotted serpent or grub-like creature rendered in yellow, green and brown. Across the top is an arched block-letter word in red, orange, blue and green with white highlights, with a small horned demon or gargoyle head peering out directly beneath it. The lower third carries large stacked title lettering, PICTURE above DIM, and a row of white circles spelling out a word sits in the bottom-left corner. Several rectangular windows are cut into the art for displays, showing red LED digits and a CREDIT label. Condition is fair, with scratches and scuffing on the black background and reflections on the display windows.
