Fingerprint: Ring of isolated capital letters and red numerals 2–9 arcing down left and right sides interspersed with three big 1000 pop-bumper caps, playing-card illustrations sprayed across teal and pink center-left, bright yellow tapered ROLLOVER BUTTON VALUE wedge with three stacked value discs

Distinctive

The most memorable feature is the ring of isolated capital letters and red numerals 2-9 that arc down both the left and right sides of the playfield, mixed with three big 1000 pop-bumper caps. Second is the trio of loose playing-card illustrations sprayed and tilted across the teal and pink centre-left: a black spade card, a red diamond card and a large ace of hearts drawn at a jaunty angle as if tumbling down the field. Third, a bright yellow tapered 'ROLLOVER BUTTON VALUE' wedge in the centre carrying three stacked blue-rimmed value discs, 1000, 100 and 10. Fourth, the honest vintage condition: the paint is worn back to bare wood in a wide band above the flippers, and the whole lower third is a white apron with red-trimmed instruction cards and a big blue-and-red flipper-button arrow.

Setting

  • Flat abstract sunburst and wedge colour blocking rather than any depicted scene
  • Golden-yellow rayed background across the whole upper playfield
  • Turquoise/teal diagonal wedge down the left side
  • Rose-pink wash across the lower centre and right
  • White lacquered lower deck and aprons with red pinstriping

Symbols

  • Scattered numerals 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and j
  • Special starburst markers
  • Blue double-headed arrow
  • Red pinstriped border lines
  • White circular target inserts
  • Suit pips of spades, hearts and diamonds

Notable shapes

  • A tapered yellow keyhole/wedge in the centre carrying the three rollover value discs
  • Two long arcing rows of small round target faces forming a chevron
  • A wide circular brown worn patch above the flippers where the finish has gone
  • A keyhole-shaped wooden arch cutout at the top of the cabinet

Full description

A 1960s-style electro-mechanical playfield shot from directly above through a locking glass door, with the wooden cabinet rim and the front coin-door apron visible. The field is divided into broad pastel zones: a yellow-gold sunburst across the upper half, a teal/turquoise wedge down the left, and a pink-magenta wash across the lower centre. Three large round pop-bumper caps with red starbursts and yellow rims sit in a triangle up top and mid-field, each printed 1000 with the smaller ring text EIGHTY WHEN LIT. Red numerals 2 through 9 run down the left and right margins on white oval inserts, interspersed with isolated capital letters such as A, C, H and J, and two SPECIAL labels with a starburst between them. The lower deck carries three printed instruction cards: a TOP CARD panel of 5 BALLS PER PLAY rules, a FLIPPER BUTTONS ON SIDE OF CABINET arrow on a blue-and-red ribbon, an INSERT COIN ONLY WHEN COIN ENTRANCE IS LIT notice, and a replay-score box. A blue script signature reading D. Gottlieb & Co. with 165, W. LAKE ST. underneath sits centre-low. Paint is faded and heavily worn, with bare wood showing across the lower middle and scuffed white on the aprons.

Full description

A painted backglass panel in a loose, cartoonish airbrushed style, dominated by a warm yellow and red splash of background colour on the left and centre, cut through by angular teal-blue and grey geometric shapes. Across the lower left, the title ROYAL KNIGHT is lettered in large, slanted, blocky capitals of pale blue-grey with a darker outline and a lighter highlight, spanning nearly half the width of the glass; a short line of small pale print sits directly beneath it but is too soft to resolve. Upper right, a row of five white mechanical score reels shows the digits 6 7 8 9 0 in black, set in a black window with a white face plate. Scattered across the whole surface are dozens of tumbling white playing cards with red and black pips and patterned card backs, at many angles. On the right stands a large circular wheel or shield of concentric coloured segments, red and gold, with a red spade and other suit marks on a white band across it, and further card pips over its face. The composition is busy, flat and poster-like, with heavy hand-inked outlines.
