Full description

Illuminated backglass in a red-and-black ornate horror-comic style, framed by a dark red border of curling vine scrollwork. A huge green-skinned vampire dominates the left half: black slicked-back hair, red-rimmed staring eyes, flared nostrils, open mouth with pointed fangs and red tongue, clawed hands with long red nails. He crouches over a small human figure in a white shirt whose head is a blank featureless oval, labelled 1 OR 2 CAN PLAY. The title VAMPIRE is in huge dripping blood-red block letters with black shading on a blue night sky streaked with clouds, and green cursive Bally sits above it. A ragged bat with a snarling orange-brown furry face and spread black wings hangs over the title. Numerous small black bats scatter across the sky; grave crosses and a leaning grey tombstone fill the lower right, where a cat, a ribcage skeleton, a white skull with glowing red eyes, and a rat sit on green grass. Top blue panels read 1ST PLAYER (18430) and 2ND PLAYER (00000) in yellow-outlined type on green reels, with a small orange 90 above. Bottom red banner reads BALL IN PLAY with a green arrow and GAME OVER in pink-red. Dominant colours red, black, green, blue.

Fingerprint: Bright-green-skinned vampire with wrinkled snarling face, glowing red-rimmed eyes, bared white fangs, blue-purple high-collared cloak holding pale oval hand mirror, VAMPIRE rendered as dripping red blood letters with Bally in green script, huge black bat with wings spread over four-pointed star, graveyard vignette with gothic fence posts, pale blue night sky, deep red border

Distinctive

The single most memorable element is a lurid bright-green-skinned vampire with a wrinkled snarling face, glowing red eyes, bared fangs and a blue-purple cloak, holding up a pale oval hand mirror. Close behind that in memorability is the title VAMPIRE rendered as dripping red blood letters with the word Bally above in green script. A large black bat flying head-on with wings spread across the top of the sky, directly above a shooting star, frames the whole upper half. The pale oval mirror the vampire holds carries its own small printed instruction, making it double as a rules panel. The whole piece is ringed by a thick glossy red border carrying the only bottom text, BALL IN PLAY with an arrow.

Full description

A portrait-format painted backglass dominated by a deep red border surrounding a pale blue night-sky panel. Across the top, a black bat with wings fully spread flies head-on over a small four-pointed star, with dozens of smaller black bats scattered across the sky behind it. Two horizontal score panels sit at upper left and upper right on blue banners with heavy black frames, headed by yellow-orange lettering reading 1ST PLAYER and 2ND PLAYER, each above five white mechanical score reels with black digits. The title occupies the centre-right: VAMPIRE in very large red letters with black shading, drawn as if the paint is dripping, with the smaller word Bally above it in slanted green script with a black outline. The main figure is a waist-up vampire at left: a bright green face with a deeply wrinkled furrowed brow, pointed ears, glowing red-rimmed eyes, a black widow's peak of hair, bared white fangs, and a blue-purple high-collared cloak. He holds up a pale oval hand mirror. The lower half shows a graveyard scene of leaning gothic fence posts, iron railings, a stone building, a broken cart wheel, and a prone figure. Yellow lettering along the bottom reads BALL IN PLAY with a right-pointing arrow.
